What type of moisturiser is best for your skin?

When you wander the aisles of your favorite health and beauty store, you are probably amazed by the sheer numbers of available moisturizers. Each of them claims to be better than the other, and they all seem to have specific ingredients that might be challenging to understand. But when it comes down to choosing the right moisturizer, it is the texture that we should look for, because this is what makes it feel right on our skin. What types of moisturizer textures are there and why should we choose one over the other?

Cream

A moisturizing cream tends to have a denser texture than others and is ideal if your skin is particularly prone to dry patches or flaky bits. The texture is usually quite firm and you may find that this type of moisturizer will take a little blending to penetrate the skin. Night creams are often thicker as they are richer in oils and ideal for the time of the day when you don’t wear make-up. Creams are usually sold in pots, but can also be packed in tubes.

Gel

This type of moisturizer is a lightweight, usually oil-free formula. Such a type of moisturizer is perfect for skins that are oily or prone to breakouts. A gel moisturizer is also a good idea during the summer months when your skin may sweat. Once your gel moisturizer dries on your skin, it becomes a perfect base for your makeup. You will usually find this moisturizer in a squeezy tube.

Lotion

A lotion is a type of moisturizer that usually comes in a bottle and should be shaken well before use, as the liquid may separate. While you may use a lotion on your face, there are also moisturizing lotions for your body. The formula is richer than a gel but not as rich as a cream. Lotion moisturizers are as good as all other moisturizers.

Sun protection

All types of moisturizers can contain sun protection, but SPF is usually added in body lotions and face creams. It is very important to choose a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, especially when it is summer and you stay outdoors during the day. A cream with broad-spectrum SPF can be applied under your makeup and offer good protection for a whole day. A lotion may need to be reapplied throughout the day to your body for maximum coverage.

Considering the benefits of every type of moisturizer, we advise you to try out different types and identify the one that best meets your skin needs. Don’t forget during the summer months to always choose a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 – preferably more – to protect your skin from melanoma or other sun damage.
