Dermatologists definition

Dermatology can be a difficult subject. This medical field applies to all of the known skin issues, and if you are dealing with a certain skin issue you will be taken care of by a dermatologist. But what exactly IS a dermatologist and what does he or she do? Let's take a look at the dermatologist's definition.

Official dermatologists definition:

Dermatology involves but is not limited to study, research, and diagnosis of normal and disorders, diseases, cancers, cosmetic and aging conditions of the skin, fat, hair, nails and oral and genital membranes, and the management of these by different investigations and therapies, including but not limited to dermatohistopathology, topical and systemic medications, dermatologic surgery and dermatologic cosmetic surgery, immunotherapy, phototherapy, laser therapy, radiotherapy, and photodynamic therapy.

Above is the definition as stated by The New Zealand Dermatological Society, which is complete but not so easy to read.

Basically, it comes down to this: dermatologists are involved in the medical care of the skin and also aligning parts like fat, hair, and nails.

Common skin disorders where dermatologists are involved:

  • Skin cancer
  • Warts
  • Fungal infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Acne
  • Hand dermatitis
